Business owners, Realtors, brokers tour former Maytag plant

Galesburg - Economic development leaders invited businesses to Galesburg on Friday in the hope they would help fill several million square feet of available space.

"It's one thing for me to talk about a (1 million square-foot) building," said Linda Utsinger, vice president of business development for the Galesburg Regional Economic Development Association. "It's another thing for people to actually see it."

GREDA, Tower Investments LLC., Industrial Realty Group and several other organizations invited real estate brokers and business owners to the former Maytag plant on Monmouth Boulevard. They hoped to attract businesses that would lease space in the building.

Tower Investments and Industrial Realty Group own the 1.3-million square-foot former Maytag plant, the 850,000 square-foot Maytag warehouse and the nearly 1 million square-foot building that once housed Butler Manufacturing.

The two companies are leasing space in the three buildings to businesses and have a total of nine tenants, said Karen Kistler, property manager for Industrial Realty Group.

"We've got some good facilities here that are readily available for tenants to move in," Kistler said.

Maytag employed about 2,400 people, and Butler employed about 1,000 before announcing they would close their Galesburg operations.

The space inside the buildings is now being divided and leased to other industrial-based businesses that need access to railroad service, truck loading docks and other modes of transportation.

Among those who received an invitation to the meeting and tour was Rob Powell, development manager for Galesburg.

"We like to know what's available," said Powell. "I'm impressed. They seem to know what they're doing."

A slide presentation was followed by a bus tour of the&nbsp.

"We want, especially, to show people the quality of buildings that are here," said Matt Marks, senior vice president of Tower Investments.
